While it sounds good to foot the entire bill ALL the time, the realization of how much everything costs on top of the normal activities is hitting me like a ton of bricks. My kid needs a summer job. Something flexible, where we can go visit these colleges and they can still make some money. We all want to live in that world, right?
My kid is responsible. They've never had to work before because in my mind, school and activities is the primary job. Make the grades, let's get some scholarships, and all will be well. The simple thought of my kid going to work brings a mix of emotions - pride, concern, and a faint reminder of my own first job experience.
What could my kid possibly learn by having a summer job? Time management, responsibility, the value of hard work, what taxes mean, and all that other stuff to point them in the direction of self-reliance and independence (I know ... they can learn all those things without a job). Truth is, depending on how much tuition is, they may have work study, or may become an RA (resident assistant for you newbies). That's a job, even though in most cases it's easy, but knowing commitment to something other than an extracurricular activity is key.
This all sounds good, but the search for the perfect summer job isn't easy. It's HARD out here. I've been teaching her how to navigate through online job postings, checking out local businesses, and of course word-of-mouth opportunities, hoping to find a position that not only suits her interests, but can accommodate this crazy summer schedule. I can't wait to see her eyes light up from getting her first check and then the screams when she's formally introduced to Uncle Sam (ha!)
Honestly, the summer job journey isn't just about earning money; it's about reinforcing those valuable life skills I've been teaching that will come in handy, building confidence, and creating lasting memories. This chapter is one I feel privileged to witness and support along the way.
So here we are, looking for a job and deciding which colleges we're going to visit. Whether we drive or fly, it's going to be a huge expense - one that definitely takes planning. I've been saving for this, but let's see if it's going to be enough. Colleges, here we come...
